Wow, there is nothing better than feeling the tug on your rod, pulling the tip towards the lake below. You pull back instinctively, got em! Your drag starts to make that short squeal so familiar when you have that big one on your line.

That big one, if you are on Rice Lake is quite likely a Bass. Bass offer one of the best fresh water battles between man and fish. These fish put up a fight, whether their diving down to the bottom or jumping out of the water only 20 feet away from your boat.

The great Bass Fishing on Rice Lake attracts young and old, creating wonderful family memories that can last a life time.

Catching these bass doesn’t have to be hard as these guys will go for the most basic presentations. One of the best and most least expensive setups is by using live dew worms and a single hook spoon.

My personal favorite is a 1 ½” Victor spoon with a yellow to red transition colored blade. This spoon is the most versatile lure in my Rice Lake collection. (catching everything in the lake with it, except Musky, more than a few times) This inexpensive lure is manufactured locally at Lucky Strike Bait Works, not even a 20 minute drive from Rice Lake in the city of Peterborough.

Large and Small mouth Bass can be found just about everywhere on the lake. Start by sitting on the edge of weed lines, transitioning from shallow to deep water. If that doesn’t produce find yourself some structure, perhaps a stump or fallen tree that hangs out into the water. There is bound to be some action close by.

For Small mouth Bass, find areas of the lake with a rocky bottom (around many of the islands) will significantly increase your chances of landing a big “smallie”.

Bass Fishing on Rice Lake opens the 4th Saturday in June an goes until Decmber 15th each year. Come out and take pleasure in one of the most productive Bass lakes in Ontario.

Don't forget that Rice Lake is also well known for it's Crappie and Panfish as well. Please note that there are new Fishing Regulations on Rice Lake beginning in 2010. Crappie and Panfish as well.
