There are many Local Attractions and things to keep yourself occupied if fishing boating, canoeing or kayaking on Rice Lake don’t interest you.

There is also a great general store located lees than a kilometer away from our cottages that has just about anything you might need or may have forgotten to pack. They carry milk, dairy products, fresh baked goods daily, canned goods, basic medicines (such as aspirin and cold medication), pop, snacks, bread as well as candy…etc.

They also make excellent home made pizza for the meals when you don’t want BBQ.

Also in town is the local gas station for any fuel needs (they carry premium and 2 cycle oil if need fuel for your boat) or unplanned mechanical problems that may arise as well as Ice (in big cubes that last longer in your cooler). If you are looking for live bait they carry worms which work great for most of the fish to be caught in Rice Lake.

If you love great French fries then you are in luck, there is the best around for miles at the tennis courts at the corner of county road #9 and county rd. #18 (about 5kms down the road on Scenic Rice Lake Drive, just through Gore Landing heading south). It is open 11am.-5pm. Friday, Saturday and Sundays beginning in April until Thanksgiving weekend (weather permitting).

If you’re looking for a great place for a full home cooked meal then Pitcher’s Place is less than 5 kms away in nearby Gores Landing. The food here is excellent you can even get fresh walleye (pickerel) when it is in season and they also offer alcoholic beverages. Speaking of alcoholic beverages if you run out of your favorite beer, wine or liquor there is a beer and liquor section at the general store in Gores Landing that should be able to satisfy most of your requests. (just don’t leave it too late in the day as they close around 6 or 7 pm every night).

There are more local attractions in Bewdley to the west and Alderville/Roseneath in the east both are approximately within 10kms drive from Railway Cottages.

Bewdley offers a couple of more Restaurants as well as a good fishing tackle shop and a full scale Liquor store as well.

Alderville/Rosenath is a 1st nation reserve with a great Art gallery featuring native artists with items for sale as well.

If you are looking for different ideas for the kids and the non-fisherman two good options are Cobourg to the south (you actually were already there if you came via the 401) which has a mall, Wal-Mart, Canadian Tire, as well as many grocery store chains and restaurants.

Another great local attraction is the city of Peterborough , which has everything Cobourg has (minus the beach), it may have a better mall (Landsdowne Mall). The one thing it does have as a fun family attraction is a free zoo. The zoo also has a small splash pad area as well as a great sand and playground area for the little ones.

As you can tell there are plenty of local attractions near us at Railway Cottages to satisfy those who wants to explore the beautiful areas surrounding Rice Lake, Ontario.
